Overview

Climbers have enjoyed ascending up this thin pinnacle for well over 30 years…and now it’s your turn to climb to the top! Don’t have any climbing equipment? Don’t even worry about it – Outdoor Skills And Thrills has everything you will need for the adventure. No experience? No worries – Having some climbing experience would certainly be advantageous, but it’s not required to experience this magical adventure. Although we can’t guarantee you will make it to the top, the climb itself is actually at a beginner level in terms of difficulty which is what makes it accessible to adventurous first timers as well. Your lead guide Aric Fishman has been able to safely coach countless beginners up and down this tower for almost a decade now, and describes getting to the top as being often more of a mental challenge than a physical one. The drive in to the parking area is rough, you will need a high clearance vehicle to make it. The hike in and hike back out are not easy going, many hills and boulders to navigate, quite technical in sections, and has even been described by some as being more challenging than climbing up the tower itself. But, the satisfaction you get for accomplishing this whole mission, priceless… So if you’re the type of person who likes to get outside for a real adventure, sign up now and experience the world-class climbing of the Thunder Bay region with Outdoor Skills And Thrills!

Dorian tower was on my bucket list for several years and after doing a little research, it appeared that Outdoor Skills and Thrills was the best choice to accomplish this task. From the initial contact through to getting the photos taken during the climb, Aric our guide was fabulous. For the climb itself, Aric provided all the gear required to safely climb the tower, and his guidance and wisdom was appreciated. He's also just a cool dude to spend the day with. Photos taken are just a few taken by Aric as part of the photo package provided (worth the extra cost).

The kind of day where I leave inspired to quit everything, runaway to Canada, and become an ice climbing apprentice. Aric gave me, my husband, and my son the time of our lives. We felt safe, energized, and fully supported/encouraged as we learned how to climb. I made it all the way to the top, which was an incredible feeling, and so much of that was thanks to Aric and his guidance. Having his dog Summit with us was an added bonus. She is the best dog. We will remember this day forever and we are already talking about coming up this summer to go rock climbing with him. If you haven’t decided yet, decide now: Book the time, live a little (or in this case, a lot) and surprise yourself with how much fun you can have climbing ice. Add in the photo package — so worth it.

We had a blast!! My partner and I don’t have much experience outdoor climbing so we decided to sign up to learn how we can do it safely. Eric was such a knowledgeable guide and after he broke down all the skills and knowledge we feel very confident climbing outdoor now. Thank you for a wonderful time!

Ice climbing was amazing! I always felt safe and secure. I 100% recommend going with Aric and his pup Summit. I had zero experience and had a blast! Such a great deal and something new and exciting to try out in the winter time.

On February 22, 2020 my boyfriend Nick and I did the Beginners Ice Climbing Adventure. Neither of us had done anything like it before but after some awesome stories from one of our friends, we decided: what the heck, let’s try something new, wild and crazy! Once we signed up, Aric sent over a comprehensive information package that included everything we needed to know from where to meet to what to bring. We met up with Aric and the other participants in Nipigon and from there followed Aric to a parking lot about 20km further east. Helmets, boots, crampons, and harnesses were distributed, all the required gear was packed up and off we went! After a quick hike we arrived at a super awesome spot: a 20m tall frozen waterfall! My first thoughts… How on earth are we going to make it up this wall?! As Aric and a couple of his friends were busy setting up the lines, we chatted a bit amongst ourselves and got to know the other climbers in our group. Aric soon showed us how to put on and use the crampons, how to use the ice axes, went over the safety procedures and then we were ready to start practicing. Everyone got the hang of it pretty quick. A little later, it was time for the real deal… Going up the ice wall. It took me a bit to calm my nerves and trust the equipment but once I did the thrill of climbing up this 20m wall of ice was incredible! Once at the top, the view was amazing and the adrenaline was just rushing through me! I couldn’t believe I was actually doing this! Nick had gone up another line and once we were both back on the ground we took a break and enjoyed the lunches we had brought from home. After lunch we went up a couple more times using different lines and trying out different sections of the ice wall, getting better as the day progressed. We both felt completely safe while climbing and descending and fully trusted our belayers. Around 4:30pm we hiked back to the parking lot and the adventure came to an end. All and all I highly recommend this adventure through Outdoor Skills and Thrills to anyone regardless of experience or skill level. Aric has tons of experience guiding and climbing and he was excellent at explaining techniques, was extremely knowledgeable, and safety was a top priority the entire day. You will undoubtedly have an amazing time, learn some new skills, meet some cool people, and cross something hella cool off your bucket list! Thanks again for an amazing day, Aric and staff!!

Had a fantastic time on an ice climbing trip booked through Climb Onsight! The process was seamless and we saved so much time on researching guides. The Muskoka Mountainworks guides are the best. They were patient with us newbies and made sure everyone had a nice balance of challenge and fun. The incredible location also made for an unforgettable day.

I booked two 8-hour courses coordinated by Climb Onsight. An outdoor sport climbing course, taught by Frederick from ONE AXE, and a top rope anchor course taught by Jonathan from Muskoka Mountainworks. Both guides were great! They explained core concepts well, were receptive to questions. The days consisted of both theory and practice. I had a great experience with Climb Onsight. Communication was prompt, scheduling was flexible, and the booking and payment process was simple. I now feel more confident climbing outside, and I wouldn’t hesitate booking another experience through Climb Onsight. I would recommend the service to anyone looking to break into outdoor climbing!

Shaun and Jonathan were great guides for ice climbing, it was our first time but they were sure to give us good guidance but also room to do things on our own. Highly recommend if anyone wants to try ice climbing!

I worked together with Shaun at Climb Onsight to put on an ice climbing clinic at Festiglace, an ice climbing festival in Quebec. Shaun was great to work with, organizing the logistics for our guests and communicating directly with the Festiglace organizers. Thanks for a good trip out East!

Shaun of Climb Onsight organized a successful corporate event for our firm retreat in Phoenix, Arizona. We had a great time rock climbing at Echo Canyon Trailhead. Some of us were first-timers and Shaun was truly an excellent source from beginning to end. Highly recommend Climb Onsight if you are looking to book a rock climbing event!
