What an amazing 3 days!
Shout out to all 3 of the instructors i had (Paul, Jean and Grant) all very knowledgeable about snow and avalanche.
If you are taking your AST1 please I beg you to do the "plus day". The other 2 days are good to get foundations down but the plus day allows you to apply them first hand all while having a blast. I had an absolutely fantastic time on the plus day and it really allowed me to set good safe practices in place before being out there without a instructor.
Really enjoyed and learned so much at the Avalanche level 2 (AST2) 4 day course. Anyone who skis, skis off pist or does back country ski touring should take this course. The instructor Shaun King was excellent and professional.
We just had an epic weekend with Yamnuska Mountain Adventures on the Wapta Glacier Traverse. It is absolutely stunning with so many different landscapes to see. Our guide Nick was very knowledgeable, organized, safety conscious and friendly. The hut accommodations were great. The food exceeded expectations. The hike was challenging but did not require any specialized or technical skills. Highly recommend!
Highly recommend Yamnuska Mountain Adventures - an excellent, professional, and genuinely enjoyable experience.
I booked a prep day for an upcoming multi-day ski touring trip, and they knew exactly how to structure it to match my goals and experience level. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and focused on real backcountry skills that actually matter.
Everything was tailored to my needs, and the atmosphere was relaxed but highly professional. On top of learning a lot, I truly felt like I got to experience the real Canadian backcountry.
Would absolutely book with them again and recommend them to anyone serious about mountain adventures.
I just completed the AST 1 course in Canmore with Yamnuska Mountain Adventures. It was an excellent course. The in class instructor Nick was very experienced and professional. The material was presented in a serious manner, as it should be. Lives are at stake. The venue in Canmore was an excellent space. The field day was on a very snowy day. Though we faced challenging driving conditions en route to the field day site (including freeing cars that were stuck just at the turn off to the field site in deep snow), everyone left extra time to get there to accommodate for that. In fact, the experience of working together and digging out cars brought us all together. This is the kind of teamwork and cooperation that is required for those planning/sharing backcountry travel. The snowfall created an excellent teaching environment. Jean was the instructor assigned to our half of the group. He had years of knowledge and experience. He was excellent. His assessment of my use of the avalanche transceiver was extremely important in improving my technique. I would highly recommend Yamnuska for AST 1 and (based on my experience) all of the AST/avalanche related courses.
